Brickfields isMalaysia’s official Little
India and used to be a simple residential
neighbourhood just outside of Kuala
Lumpur. It was recently transformed
into awide street with Indian stores and
restaurants run by the country’s Indian
community.
The shops here sell everything from
traditional Indian goods such as saris,
flower garlands, spices and Bollywood
music, to local delicacies such as
vadai,
thosai
(Indian pancakesmade from
fermented rice flour) andmore.With the
SriMahamariammanTemple
The Sri Mahamariamman Temple is the
oldest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur.
Situated at the edge of Chinatown, it was
founded in 1873, with plenty of embellish-
ment and restoration happening over the
years.
Incorporating Spanish and Italian tiles,
precious stones and gold in its design,
Kuala Lumpur’smainHindu temple is
an incongruous sight situated between
two Buddhist temples. This large and
elaborateHindu templewas founded by
Tamil immigrants fromsouthern India
who arrived inMalaya as contract labour-
ers to build the railways and roads or work
in the rubber plantations, with themain
purpose being to serve as a solace from
the rigours of their working life.
Erected by sculptors from India, there
are 228Hindu idols that are frozen in doz-
ens of scenes fromthe Ramayana. These
adorne the five tiers of the polychromatic
gopuram
(entrance gate). Besides the
intricate carvings of Hindu deities and
gold and precious stone embellishments,
the temple is also adornedwith hand-
paintedmotifs depicting stories from
early Hinduism.
