Getaway
At the final stretch, we stopped for lunch
at the Paddy shack, a rest-house next to
an old bridge over a river. After feasting
on a traditional Malay spread of rice
cooked in bamboo, chicken rendang and
fresh coconut water, we proceeded to a
45-minute descent along the river, before
arriving at the exit. A four-wheel vehicle
took us back to our cottage.
The next day, we visited the organic
farm,managed by workers residing near
Tanarimba. The assorted crops include
blue ferns, lemons, dandelions and red and
Thai basil, whichwere used formaking the
tea that was served at our breakfast.
Tanarimba even has a large conference
hall for business presentations and other
activities. Holistic and spiritual lifestyle
groups hold regularmeditation classes
here, among others. The pristine surround-
ings are enticing enough for visitors to
discover their Zen, which I managed to do.
Who knows, youmay be able to as well.
Our journey started at 10am, along a three-kmtrail that takes
five hours to complete. Our knowledgeable guides provided
entertaining nuggets on the bio-diversity and thriving yet
elusivewildlife, often difficult to spot. At several parts, the
guides pointed out the soil and plants uprooted by wild boars
searching for food.
“The jungle trek reveals how trees use different ways to grow.
Visitors also pick up survival tips, such as searching for jungle
herbs. Thosewithmedicinal qualities help a lot,” said one of
the guides. “You even learn how to use bamboo as a life saving
device, andmankind’s impact on the environment here and
what can be done to control it.”
Along the trail, we stopped several times to rest and admire
the surroundings at a leisurely pace. Halfway up the trail, we
enjoyed climbing a scramble net next to awaterfall, aided by
safety harnesses, to reach the trail’s highest point. Here, we
found several potted tree saplings on the ground. Our guides
led us in planting some of them in denuded areas along hilly
slopes. It was our small contribution toMother Nature. The
guides even avoided cutting tree branches using parangs, as we
observed during our trek.
