close to nature at
Tanarimba in Janda
Baik, just 35 km from
Kuala Lumpur. At over
1,500 feet above sea
level, the eco-friendly retreat –nestled
at the foothills of Pahang’smountainous
Main Range – started as a residential
development, where only a small group
of peoplewere allowed to build houses.
The surrounding 5,500 acres of lush
tropical rainforests are protected from
development. You can explore undulating
landscapes of majestic peaks, lush valleys,
ravines, picturesque streams, waterfalls,
wildlife and plant species, which include
Honduran pine trees.
Cooler Climate
At Tanarimba’s entrance, wewere
wowed by the unique timber-and-glass
Visitors Centre, which also serves as
amulti-purpose hall. Further inside,
visitors can check into “annexe”-type
rooms, the large EnderongHousewhich
fits 30 people, but we stayed at one of
the cottages, resplendent in traditional
Malay kampung-style architecture. The
cottage – ideal for a group of 10–has a
fully equipped kitchen, three bedrooms
(without air-conditioning) and a living
hall. Breakfast is complimentary.
We enjoyed the cool climate, which
was between 20° C and 25° C, with the
occasional thick fog. Despite the diverse
ecological and conservation attractions,
Tanarimba offers only two activities: a visit
to an organic farmand jungle trekking,
led by in-house guides and conservation-
ists. There are no F&B outlets here. To
enjoy heartymeals, take a two-minute
drive to rustic Bentong town dottedwith
old-world kopitiams (coffee-shops) and
restaurants.
Small ContributionToNature
After freshening up, we embarked on a
jungle trek (at a fee, inclusive of ameal).
Only 10 persons are allowed a day, to
minimise impact on the environment.
Gentle, calmingwaters.
