Revisiting Malaya Of Old
An old colonial building that has been revitalised and restored into an elegant space now
houses restaurants which serve contemporary, local and international cuisines.

he
city of Kuala Lumpur
is richwith culture and
heritage that has long
been a part of what
makes the city unique
and beautiful. Older buildings -which
have a certain charm- complement all
themodern development that is taking
over the city landscape. OldMalaya is one
such building. The colonial buildingwas
constructed in 1919 andwas first used to
house Colonial, and later,Malaymilitary
officers and their families. It then became
a prominent residence for the Eurasian
community of Kuala Lumpur.
Abandoned decades ago and left to
decay, the heritage buildingwas almost
demolished. Fortunately, it was bought
over and lovingly restored into a rowof
international heritage styled shop fronts.
The conservation process took one year
to restore the building’s original features.
Boasting views fromboth inside and
outside the premises which overlook leafy
green hills, parkland and themagnificent
KL Tower, OldMalaya today comprises
seven shop houses that are tastefully
designed into heritagemodelled dining
spaces, one indoor bar and an outdoor bar.

has a downstairs fine dining restaurant
designed to keepwith the look and feel
of the heritage of the building, while the
indoor bar boasts a viewof the beautiful
KL Tower through its glass roof, adding
a twist of chicness and a contemporary
