Tell us about yourself.Whatwere you
like as a child?
As a child I was told that I could not keep
quiet. In kindergarten I would constantly be
banging on the tables trying tomake beats.
Apparently as a toddler, I would try to sing
the jazz standards thatmy dadwould play
on this stereo every night. The pre-teenme
was constantly trying to imitate R&B jams
fromMichael Jackson and BrianMcknight.
Basically, I could never shut up.
Wheredoes your love formusic stem
from?
My father is an avid audiophile andmusic,
especially jazzmusic, was the norm In our
household. At that time, I did not fancy it as
much as other genres of music but as I
grewolder and became a singer, I felt
naturally inclined to it and had chops I
never knewwere there.

journey
When I was 14, I learnt how to play a
middle eastern percussion instrument
called the darbuka frombeing in a
marhaban ensemble! Slowly I grew to
likewestern percussion instruments and
picked up the drums, formed a punk rock
band and picked up the guitar and bass.
I did thismainly to impress girls.When I
realised that the girls were starting to get
impressed, I started singing to themand
developedmore confidence inmy abilities
