Wheels
All the seats are leather and the driver
gets an 8-way adjustable powered seat.
The front seats feature a heating function
as a result of the Outlander being a
fully-importedmodel. Besides that, all
the controls are practically placed on the
dashboard and steeringwheel.
Cargo space is about 128 litres with all
the seats used; not great volume but not
a dealbreaker either. Total cargo volume
with all the seats folded down is claimed
byMitsubishi as a class-leading 1,608
litres. It has to be noted that the designers
at Mitsubishi Motors weremindful
enough to design a proper stowage space
for the tonneau cover in the floor when
maximumcargo space is needed.
TheDrivetrain
This SUV is powered by a 2.4-litre 4B12
engine derived fromthe 2.0-litre engine
0 - 100 km/h : 10.2s
Fuel Consumption : 7.8 liters / 100 km (combined cycle)
Price : RM 168,600
Extras : 5 years or 100,000 km warranty
Fast Facts
found in the Lancer sedan. This engine
produces 167 PS and 222Nmof torque and
comes froma joint venture development
withDaimlerChrysler.
The engine ismatedwith a 6-speed
continuously variable transmission,
with paddle shifters, and pushes the
Outlander to 100 km/h fromstandstill in
10.2 seconds. Not too shoddy considering
this is a non-turbocharged engine and the
vehicleweighs 1,530 kg.
TheDrive
The power and torque are adequate for
mostmotorists using the Outlander as a
daily driver. You canmove the Outlander
in a fairly quickmanner, especially with
the aid of the paddle shifters but youwill
still feel the ‘rubber band’ effect of the CVT
when you get aggressivewith the throttle.
This is, however, an inherent character
of the CVTwhich youwill eventually
adapt your driving style to. The CVT and
electrically assisted steering are used
to improve fuel consumption, as is the
high-tensile, which is used to lighten the
overall weight without compromising
strength and safety.
Comfort and noise levels held upwell
even on patchy roads thanks to the
improved suspension set-up (MacPherson
struts for the front suspension and
multi-link for the rear) as well as increased
use of noise insulatingmaterials, thicker
glass andweatherstripping.
.The 3rd row seats are located over the
rear axlewhich isn’t themost comfortable
spot to sit, especially when off-road, but
it is not any worse than other 7-seater
SUVs. The Outlander is capable of off-road
excursions since it is equippedwith a
Multi-Select 4WD that gives you three
drivingmodes at the push of a button -
4WDEco, 4WDAuto and 4WD Lock.
The firstmode is for fuel economy
where the torque stays at the front wheels
and gets distributed to the rear wheels
when loss of traction is detected. The
secondmode is for optimised torque
distribution, depending on driving
conditions, especially inwet ormuddy
conditions and the thirdmode puts
torque to all four wheels tomaximise
traction.
The Features
The Outlander is equippedwith seven
airbags - driver, front passenger, side,
curtain and driver’s knees, Active Stability
Control,Hill-start Assist, Anti-lock Braking
System, Electronic Brake-force Distribu-
tion and Brake Assist. It also comes with
ISOFIX anchors and a collapsible steering
column.
Additionally, it has an electric tailgate
for easy opening and closing.
InConclusion
For a fully-importedmodel from Japan,
theMitsubishi Outlander is a robust
vehiclewhich carries good value-for-
money and competitive pricing against its
immediate class rivals.
