Spice Up
You may be expecting noise
and mayhem or looking
forward to late night
partying before you embark
on your first visit to India
but away from the crowds
there are some quiet havens
to be savoured.

India, in the
first part of the year, does
not yield to the blazing heat,
something to bear inmind
should you decide to take a
holiday visit.Why not try the city of Kochi
(Cochin) as your first port of call? The old
city is a good place to start fromwith its
relaxed atmosphere.
Tailormade
Take awalk along the riverfront where you
can see the Chinese fishing nets. There are
plenty of cafes and street stalls to browse
before you head further into the old city
where there is gorgeous architecture
to feast your eyes on before sipping a
refreshing lassi.
If the heat is getting to you, jump in
a taxi. Visit the Paradesi Synagogue,
established in 1568, then browse the
myriad of shops selling authentic Indian
goods as well other items. You can savour
the colours of the spices displayed at the
front of shop lots andmaybe pick up a few
small samples to take homewith you.
It is also a good place to get tailor-made
clothes, ranging from linen suits to a Sari,
to impress your friends back home. Leave

Whilst you arewaiting for amini-bus
pick up take a look at the traffic. People
inside cars will smile at you through the
windows. There is something in the air in
India that permeates their culture. Once
you arrive at the backwaters you can relax
and drink in the scenery. Dreamaway as
you are rowed along the backwaters with
an expanse of water reflecting the heat
you can gaze at various activities on the
water, take photographs with your SLR or
get to knowone of the other tourists on
the barge, why they are visiting India, tips
for travel to other cities or evenwhat their
story is.
Kerala is a Southern State renowned for
it’s cuisine and if Heinz is famous for it’s
57 varieties,many of the local restaurants
exceed that number in choice of different
curries on onemenu. Some of the curries
youmay be familiar with, othersmay be
hidden gems. Serendipity whilst you are
exploring the countrysidemay yield a new
culinary discovery.
Amongst themyriad of curries on offer,
vegetarian or other,Malabar stands out
as a Kerala curry worth trying. Staple
ingredients of coconutmilk and tomatoes
are subtly enhanced bymustard seeds
and ginger with the addition of kokum, a
fruit with a souring effect on themix.
