are abundant here.
From the train station we cycled to Pantai
Sri Tujuh to check-in to the Pantai Sri
Tujuh Resort, but not before we had
some refreshments. Spoilt with choices, I
ordered a mix of deep fried squid, shrimp
and various types of fish balls that’s sin-
fully delicious when dipped in the sweet
and spicy chilli sauce. One advice when
selecting your afternoon snack: Make
sure you leave some space for dinner as
the
Maggie Ketam
is simply irresistible.
Served in a classic claypot, the
Maggie
Ketam
turns a simple serving of local
instant noodle into an ultra-luxurious
dish with a gigantic crab and big fat
prawns that’re fresh to their core. The
flavour of the soup is also enhanced
with various garnishes like vegetables,
tomatoes and chilli, which makes it an
instant noodle like no other.
Meal after meal, it was finally time to
head back to my chalet at the Pantai Sri
Tujuh Resort to get some shut eye …with
a slight butt ache I might add. This was
when I regretted not taking Ammar’s offer
for a pair of cycling shorts with padding
that would put my hindpart at ease. So the
next time you are offered one, don’t act all
macho and just put it on.
Day 2: Pain in the Butt
Day two started off with yet another
heavy breakfast at Selera Daun Pisang.
This time I had
Nasi Dagang
– one of the
must haves when in Kota Bharu. A plate
of purplish rice slapped with some
gulai
and a piece of
ikan tongkol
accompanied
with some prawns makes the perfect
breakfast to start the day with.
The perfect start then led us to Kampung
Laut via a boat ride from the jetty at
Tambatan Diraja, where I had the chance
to try my hands at
serunding
and
dodol
making, and boy was it hard.
Our next destination was Wat Mai
Suwan Khiri, the Dragon Boat Temple,
before having lunch at Nasi Sumatera
Tumpat. With dishes like cow’s lungs and
brains, this place was definitely a chal-
lenge to feast in as my taste buds weren’t
accustomed to the texture of the protein,
but flavour wise, it was delicious. If you’re
an adventurous eater, I highly suggest you
give it a try – a la Fear Factor.
While in Tumpat, do not miss out
on the opportunity to visit the last stop
of the inter-state train service by KTM.
An oldie but a goodie, this place brings
nostalgic memories of the good old days
with its façade and photo opportunities
