Selangor and Sekinchan
need little introduction
as tour i s t t raps for
f i ref ly-watching and
paddy field-spotting,
respectively. Certainly,
feasting on scrumptious seafood also
ranks high on anyone’s agenda.
But if you find yourself entering ‘been
there, done that’ territory with these two
destinations, perhaps you can do a double
take and consider improvising – or what
the younger generation call ‘winging
it’ – on your next trip.
Shakti Temple
Ten minutes before reaching Kuala
Selangor via the KL-Kuala Selangor
Expressway, you will pass the rather
unassuming commune of Bukit Rotan.
You may not have reason to stop over if
not for the striking Shakti Temple (a.k.a.
Sri Shakti Devasthanam, GPS coordinates
3.301837, 101.299825) that presides on
a hill like an ancient relic against an
otherwise verdant backdrop.
The exteriors andmyriad embodiments
of Hindu deities and symbols are cast
in concrete made to resemble pink
sandstone. Other fixtures feature brass,
copper, silver, and granite. Artisans from
India were employed during the temple’s
construction, which was strictly in
accordance with ancient Hindu scriptures
such as the Vedas, Agamas and Sirpa
(architectural) Sastras. Work began
in 2002 and the shrine was officially
consecrated in April 2013.
Photography is prohibited inside the
temple, which makes the prospect of
entering evenmore enticing. After leaving
your shoes at the steps leading to the
intricately carved entrance adorned with
bells, your barefooted exploration of the
temple interiors spans across perfectly
manicured grass patches and nippy
granite flooring as you circle around
the temple’s focal point, the sanctum
sanctorum of Mother Ambal.
