A Quirky Brunch
– The Good Batch
“We
want The Good Batch to be a place
for people from all walks of life coming in
to dine – from students to working adults,
to families with children,” owner Caroline
Lai told me as I marveled at the quirky,
whimsical interior of the cozy and spa-
cious eatery, with its custom-made tables
with long wooden benches, booths with
bar seats, and even a large communal
dining table for big parties.
For over 3 years, Caroline travelled
around the world as a flight attendant for
Singapore Airlines, before leaving what
she described as a “sky-high lifestyle”
to embark on a new journey. She had so
many ideas that she wanted to give life
to, to nurture and to grow into something
phenomenal, hence the birth of The Good
Batch. With the help of her business
partner, Andrew Tan, who has years of
experience and expertise in the food and
beverage industry under his belt, the duo
was able to create a versatile place where
patrons can expect a flavourful experience
with their unique and wholesome dishes.
The Good Batch specialises in serving
breakfast all day long, so if you’re looking
for good and wholesome all-day brunch
with a twist or just a place to chill and
catch up over a pint of beer or a glass of
wine, then look no further!
A dish that really stood out in themenu
was the “Malaysian-lah”, which is a local
twist to the roti-canai burrito that’s made
with succulent roast lamb wrapped in
roti-canai (a type of Indian-influenced
smoked salmon, while the Hangover Mess
is made of corned beef mixed with pan-
fried potatoes, capsicums, topped with
two sunny side-up eggs. The Ang-Moh,
which derives from the Hokkien dialect
term for Westerners, is the name for their
version of an all-western Big Breakfast.
Something that adults, kids and “kidults”
would enjoy is the NewYorker, which is
the classic Hotdog served with a twist,
topped with fragrant corned beef and
dressed with three of The Good Batch’s
homemade sauces.
The Good Batch is not just about
breakfast; the eatery also comes with a
classic-styled bar with a laid-back, trendy
ambience that makes it the perfect place
to chill and catch up over a pint of beer
or a glass of wine. You can also indulge
in the exciting array of home-concoction
Mojitos designed by Andrew himself.
With flavors like coconut, passionfruit,
pineapple, watermelon and lemongrass
ginger to choose from, you can now
pair your favorite brunch dishes with a
refreshing cocktail. Sounds like a plan!
Antipodean gives you a Kiwi/Austra-
lian experience, modeled based on Alun’s
30 years of experience working in cafes in
Wellington, Sydney and Auckland. This
café that has taken KL by storm serves
Australian home cooked meals that are
both healthy and delicious. If there was
one way I could describe the food served
here, it would be comfort food.
At Antipodean, only top quality coffee
beans by Indonesia’s top specialty roaster
Merdeka Coffee is used so you can be
assured of a good cuppa here. The cup of
hot cappuccino I had was nothing short of
rich and flavourful, with a full-body aroma
that perfectly complemented my meal.
It was tough selecting which dish to
have, so I decided to order 3 different types
of dishes to sample. I first had the Big
Breakfast that consisted of toast, a choice
of bacon, chicken, beef or pork sausages,
sautéed mushrooms, a crispy hash brown
and perfectly scrambled eggs. My favourite
item in the dish definitely was the sautéed
mushrooms that were seasoned well and
cooked to a lovely and flavorful brown
shade while keeping the insides juicy.
The Bagel with chorizo tomato,
mozzarella and tomato pesto tasted re-
ally heavenly, especially if you’re a fan of
melted, stringy mozzarella cheese. The
flatbread) that comes with an absolutely
fantasticmouth-wateringmint sauce that’s
made right in the kitchen.
The breakfast dishes are not only loved
for their quirky names, but because they
are scrumptious and above all, healthy and
wholesome as well – perfect for starting
your day right! The Norwegian consists of
perfectly poached eggs with a capsicum
and onion confit on a lightly toasted
butter bun, wrapped aroundwith a slice of
dish of my choice was the Eggs Benedict;
I loved it here! The bacon was thick and
smoky; there was a generous portion of
silky creamy egg to have some in every
bite, along with fresh greens and balsamic
vinaigrette and brown bread. A selection of
pies, cakes and muffins are also available,
if you like having a little sweet ending to
your meal. Breakfast is served all day, so
you can actually drop by for dinner to
avoid the breakfast crowd.
