Brunch in Style
– Acme Bar & Coffee (ABC)
When
I heard about the much-raved-
about Sizzling Brownie & Oreo Ice cream
from Acme Bar & Coffee, or ABC as it is
known as, I knew that I had to make a trip
there to find out about what the eatery
had to offer, and boy, was I glad that I did!
Situated on the ground floor of the
impressive Troika building just on the
outskirts of the KLCC Park, ABC is a
casual dining restaurant with character.
The décor incorporates high concrete
ceilings, extensive use of steel and glass,
and subtle, quirky additions such as old
Brunch with a Smile –
Antipodean
Dubbed
as the “best brunch outlet in
KL”, Antipodean is definitely no stranger
to brunch foodies. With a selection of
over 30 different brunch dishes on the
menu, you’ll have a hard time deciding
what to go for, especially when they all
sound so enticing – Banana Pancakes
with Butterscotch Sauce, Smoked Salmon
Omelette, French Toast with Bacon; sign
me up for more!
A smile that you can’t miss is that of
owner Alun Evans who will be busy greet-
ing and having a little chit chat with the
patrons of the café. Service comes with a
smile at Antipodean, and what better way
is there to start your day thanwith a warm
smile and a scrumptious meal! Filled with
the intoxicating aroma of coffee, this café
lamps, vintage style tiling, solid wooden
tables, and the best part, a picturesque
al fresco dining area. This casual dining
establishment offers familiar comfort food
that is best described as pan-Asian in its
flavours.
“We travel a lot to the US and were
heavily inspired and influenced by the
cooking scene and architecture in the
Pacific Northwest, and that was the
starting point for ABC.” Owner Andrew
Wong informed me when asked what the
inspiration behind Acme Bar &Coffeewas.
I started off my meal with the Acme
Breakfast Club, which I was told to be one
of the more popular brunch dishes on the
menu. You get to choose your bread, your
meats, eggs and sides. All the food are
freshly cooked to order so it can be quite
a wait on busier days, but it’s definitely
worth it!
Other brunch dishes that are worth
trying out are such as the Baked Egg Pan,
a medley of red peppers, zucchini, mush-
rooms, shredded smoked duck on tomato
olive sauce, organic eggs and garlic toast,
and the Pear and Buckwheat Pancakes
that consists of organic buckwheat flour
pancakes with pear toppedwith cranberry
butter and maple syrup.
I finally got to taste what I came here
for – the Sizzling Brownie & Oreo Ice
cream! A hot pan is served at the table
with a generous pour of chocolate sauce
and as it burns on the hot pan, the sizzle
and smell is a sensory experience even
before you put it in your mouth; and
when you do, it all comes together. Each
bite was heavenly, and the ice-creamwas
homemade by the good folks of ABC so it
wasn’t overly sweet.
Those with a sweet toothwould rejoice
at the sight of the myriad of cakes that’s
displayed on the counter of the eatery.
After all, there really is nothing better than
enjoying a relaxing brunch paired with a
slice of cake and a good cup of coffee with
friends or family on a lazy weekend.
is cosy, busy and absolutely buzzing with
life, and that’s the atmosphere that draws
the crowd in.
“The cafe concept would be at home
in Little Bourke Street in Melbourne, or
Courtney place in Wellington. The cafe
is tightly laid out and the noise level of
clinking crockery and chatter is something
we have really worked on increasing! A
noisy café is a healthy café.” Alun tells me.
