have always felt the urge to participate
whenever there are any championships
held in Indonesia, but unfortunately there
are too many risks involved and work
is my priority now. Honestly, if I could
make the same amount of money from
being a professional
pencak silat
athlete,
I would choose that over working in the
entertainment industry.
Do guys find you intimidating because of
your martial art skills?
I don’t think they’re intimidated, but
they know not to mess around with me!
Although I domartial arts, I’ve never felt a
need to bring it out. As a person I’m quite
fierce anyway, due to my Bugis heritage.
That usually puts people straight before
they even know I do
silat
.
What’s your biggest accomplishment as
a martial artist?
I’ve won a lot of medals, and equally lost
a lot of my fights too. My biggest achieve-
ment was being in the 2003 European
Championship for the artistic categories.
But my proudest achievement was when
I managed to win a match against an
opponent whom I had lost to before. It
took a lot of hard work and discipline to
achieve that, not forgetting having to train
my butt off every day!
I think I’m just
very lucky
to have been
exposed to so
many different
cultures, people
and experiences
growing up. It
gaveme a need
to immerse
myself in asmuch
of what this
world has to offer
as possible.”
