Woven Bamboo Basket Boat, Vietnam
Most
commonly foundwhen travelling between
Hoi An andHue on the central Vietnamese coast,
traditional basket boats, locally called
thuyen
thung
, are small, round bamboo boats as a
mode of transportation for occupants of fishing
villages. The villagers make
thuyen thung
by
knitting strips of bamboo and covering it with
chai (a waterproof material made from a plant).
These boats are still used for fishing although
tours are also available for tourists who wish
to experience travelling on these unique boats
while enjoying the spectacular scenery.
Camel Ride, Morocco
Typically,
camels have two humps on
their backs, however, the camels in Morocco
only have one and are therefore known as
Dromedaries. Most of the time, they are very
gentle creatures that are highly intelligent and
extremely patient. The allure of Morocco goes
hand in hand with the images and culture of
caravans of camels and their owners trekking
across the desert. Travelling by camel through
Morocco under the clear blue skies and across
the vast landscapes of breathtaking beauty is an
unforgettable experiencewhere you can discover
the small villages and settlements that are found
off the beaten track, while being safely carried
across the unforgiving terrain on one of the
desert’s most wonderful animals.
Jeepney, Philippines
Jeepneys
are the most common formof public transport
throughout the many islands of the Philippines. They are
known for their crowded seating and kitsch decorations,
which have become an ubiquitous symbol of Filipino
culture and art.
Jeepneys
were originally made from
U.S. military jeeps leftover fromWorld War II. The word
jeepney
is a portmanteau of the words “jeep” and “jitney”,
a franchised small bus that carries passengers on a regular
route with flexible schedule.
Jeepneys
are a great way to
explore the Philippines and get a sense of the place from
the local’s perspective as they are the preferred means of
local transport for majority of the population. Riding on
the
jeepney
is a truly exhilarating experience as it weaves
through traffic with the driver blowing the loud horn at
everyone and everything.
