growing these past few years. Comedy
festivals, competitions and even comedy
clubs have started showing up across the
city. “Now we have comedy clubs where
people can go and watch comedy several
times a week. There are at least seven
or eight different venues in Klang Valley
where comedian can go and try their
material,” explains Douglas.
The future is definitely looking bright
for comedy in Malaysia. Hans has his
eyes set on the Brunei audience as well
as a possible comedy matinee shows
that he is very keen on pursuing in the
future. For now,
Lawak Ke Der Live Di
Singapura!
hopes to capture the heart of
its Singaporean fans and turn the show
into a yearly tradition.
No laughing matter
Lawak Ke Der
came about when a slot
at Istana Budaya was left empty after
a production was cancelled. Hans was
asked us to fill up the spot, so he decided
to bring together local comedians to
perform stand-up comedy on stage.
“With the time constraint, I needed a
quick show to put together. We knew we
could get it done and
Lawak Ke Der
was
very easy to present minus the props and
elaborate set up. Fast-forward to today,
we are now on the yearly calendar of
Istana Budaya and taking the production
to Singapore!”
According to Harith, the decision to
bring
Lawak Ke Der
across the causeway
had a lot to do with the response that
they have been getting from their Singa-
porean fans on social media. “They kept
asking when we are coming to Singapore.
In fact, I have met up with a lot of fans
who bought their tickets in advance,
booked their accommodations and flew
in from Singapore to catch our show in
Kuala Lumpur.”
Aside from Harith Iskander and
Douglas Lim,
Lawak Ke Der Live Di
Singapura!
will also feature the comedic
talent of Afdlin Shauki, Bocey and Sherry
Alhadad. Sherry Alhadad is the first ever
female to be featured in the show and her
role is as the emcee who introduces the
comedians as well as keeping audience at
ease throughout the show. Hans admitted
to being impressed with howwell Sherry
has performed at Lawak Ke Der’s last
Kuala Lumpur show.
Just like Sherry, Douglas Lim has
also been getting rave reviews for his
performance as one of the acts in Lawak
Ke Der. The local media was totally
impressed with his ability to make people
laugh despite him being fairly green
in the Malay comedy scene. “I started
doing stand-up comedy eight years ago
in English. In fact, most of us have been
doing urban comedy until Lawak Ke Der,
which is fully in Malay.”
When asked about local comedy
scene, all three of them agreed that the
Malaysian scene has been booming and
