The early years
Allahyarham Mokhtar Dahari, second born to Dahari
Abeng and Aminah Binti Sharikan, was born on Nov 13 1953
at Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. Mokhtar showed a deep interest
in football at an early age, and represented Victoria Institution
during his secondary education. As time went on, Mokhtar’s
skills improved, and he was entrusted to play for his home state of
Selangor in 1972.
Mokhtar, together with the likes of Datuk Soh Chin Aun, R.
Arumugam and Datuk Santokh Singh, played for Malaysia and
became a powerful team, defeating Asian giants such as South
Korea and Japan.
Best of the best
Mokhtar is considered to be Malaysia’s best footballer of all time. He
helped Selangor win 10 Malaysian cup titles and scored a staggering
125 goals in 167 appearances for Malaysia. He was also the driving
force that helped Malaysia win the 1974 Asian Games Bronze medals
and successive SEA Games gold medals in 1977 and 1979.
