DATUK SOH CHIN AUN
Datuk Soh Chin Aun, or knows as ‘Tauke’ or ‘Towkay’, played
alongside Allahyarham Mokhtar Dahari for Selangor and
Malaysia.
“I first met Mokhtar Dahari in 1973. I was playing for MCIS
and he was with PKNS. We played against each other quite
often in the Selangor League, and played together for Selangor
and Malaysia too,” said Datuk Soh.
Good times
Datuk Soh says he has many fond memories
of Mokhtar. “Of course Mokhtar is one of the
best strikers we ever produced. It was always
a tough game when PKNS met MCIS.”
“We shared so many good things, especially
when we played together for Selangor. We won
so many championships and trophies playing
together.”
He said that his responsibilities as team captain
were often lightened when he was teamed with
Mokhtar. “We were good friends to start off with
and played together for Selangor FA in the Malaysia
Cups and the FA Cups.
One of his numerous achievements involved him scoring
a double in the 2-0 win against Arsenal in a friendly game in
1975, which gave rise to the to rumours of the English giant’s
interest in him. Known for his speed, accuracy, and power,
Mokhtar was named the best Asian striker by the World Star
Soccer magazine in 1976, at the tender age of 23.
History in the making
One history making moment was when he he led Selangor
FA in a match against Diego Maradona’s Boca Juniors on
Jan14 1982.
Mokhtar also scored a goal for Malaysia from the halfway
line, beating Joe Corrigan, with an incredible shot in a 1–1
draw against England B in 1978, dribbling past half of the
Englishmen coached by Bobby Robson. What was even more
memorable was when Gordon Hill named Mokhtar ‘Hero
Dahari’ in his column in Shoot! magazine after the England
B tour in 1978.
