SmartShopper first started in 2012,
when they realised it was difficult to
find a single source of price comparisons
from multiple supermarkets. The app
provides relevant and timely information
to help shoppers be SMARTER – maxi-
mising their shopping budget.
“The startup community in London
demonstrated a well developed support
system led by the government, which
is key for many successful startups.
The ecosystem is so strong with many
experienced organisations ready to
support new initiatives and ideas. We
believe that we are still in the early
stages of a strong startup ecosystem.
The initiatives by MDeC will build solid
foundation for future success.”

Solarpowered
Solar Flare is a startup founded by Leong
Yok Tien and Ng Kok Kwan (KK), who are
working tomake solar power easily acces-
sible for everyone, with the use of solar
panels. Yok Tien is from the IT industry
and KK is a management consultant with
a background in engineering.
Solar Flare’s aim is to make solar panel
installation easy for consumers. “We bring
convenience to consumers by giving
them access to their roof’s generation
potential and offer affordable installation.
We partner with solar service companies
to install the panels and help customers go
green at their finger tips,” said Yok Tien.
Solar Flare said their most valuable
experience that they took away from their
London journey was the people they met
and the knowledge shared. “The openness
and the amount of sharing was amazing.
We met with startups at our stage and
startups which have made millions in
funding during our networking sessions.
There is a community and a culture around
the startup
scene and we were welcomed
with open arms.”
