Journey Through History
B
efore
KLCC and the
Golden Triangle, the
heart of Kuala Lumpur
was situated in the
older part of the city
where Merdeka Square,
Sultan Abdul Samad
Building, Selangor Club and Chinatown
are found. These traces of the city’s
history are still standing proudly. The
Old City Centre has proven to be a huge
favourite among tourists who came to
bask in the unpretentious air and atmo-
sphere that makes Kuala Lumpur one of
the most iconic cities of Asia. Wandering
around the area, I came upon beautiful
surprises that I never expected to find.
Old Architecture
Sultan Abdul Samad building was the
ultimate architectural symbolism of
Kuala Lumpur before the Twin Towers
nabbed that title. The building was
named after the then reigning Sultan
of Selangor and formerly housed the
superior courts of the country. Located in
front of Dataran Merdeka (Independence
Square) and the Royal Selangor Club,
take the opportunity to admire its 18
th
century architecture with your camera
ready in hand. Today, this historical
building houses the Supreme and High
Courts. Another historical landmark
worth visiting is The Coliseum Theatre
building. The Art Deco-style building
was built in 1920 and is one of the
oldest cinemas in the country. Do not be
surprised by the fact that up until today,
the cinema remains in business showing
mostly Tamil and Hindi movies.
Cheap Thrills
Who needs big fancy shopping malls
when you can find bargains at Petaling
Street? Fondly known as Chinatown,
the street market is known for cheap
counterfeit goods and rare souvenir
items. If you prefer your designer goods
coming from Paris and haggling is not
